Children's Day

Monday, May 5th

Kyung Hee and Ae-Ran invited us over for lunch. There was no school today as this is a national holiday for children. The children get socks as a gift.

This is the view from Kyung Hee & Ae-Ran's apartment 13 stories up. I could see out to the Yellow Sea from their "porch."

The view of directly below are fields of garlic. To the right, there is a tractor preparing the wet soil. You can see the terraced fields for rice. It was a beautiful day in the 70's and a breeze. Note the planting method...they hill the ground in rows and then cover it in black vinyl/plastic. Then they plant the seedlings.

We had a wonderful meal. The teacher from the school who also goes to Ae-Ran's church lives in the same apartment complex and came over with her 2 children to join us. Kyung Hee and Ae-Ran are cooking pieces of bacon on a gas skillet. Kyung Hee came home from work to join us for lunch as well. We walked over...it took 30 minutes and every step was uphill. We had just arrived when Kyung Hee drove up. He drove us back home then on his way back to work.

After lunch, I got to play on Ae-Ran's piano for awhile. That was nice! It's been a long time since I've been able to just relax and play leisurely. Then, to our surprise, they come out with a cake and begin to sing Happy Birthday to Joy! They celebrated her American age of 6! On Wednesday, however, she wants to consider herself seven!
