English Summer Camps

Here are pictures from the month of August: 3 weeks of English summer camp at church!



John and I helped out with grades 2-3. Here is a student with a teacher, YeRam. YeRam was our first Korean we've met who spoke excellent English. In fact, as it turned out, English was more her first language than Korean since her parents were missionaries and she grew up all over. She also lived 3 years in the US. The past 3 years now she has been back in Korea attending a university.

At the end of the 3 weeks, each class put on a performance in a festival for all the parents. Our class sang 4 songs and acted out a skit for each song. They did very good and had a lot of fun!

First, everyone sang together. Then, the kindergarten class sang a song and recited I Cor 13 - Love is...

Next up was our class. Their English names were l-r: Susan, Jackie, Emma, Joel, Bonnie, Sadie, and Diane. (Yes, Jackie & Diane were twins!) And they are all wearing one of John's shirts...lets just say that I don't think I have the most clothes in the closet anymore!!! haha! Actually, John gets them for school since they have English on them. However, there are limited t-shirts with correct English usage to be found.



Emma is speaking...then they perform "The Invisible Bench" skit. Emma "sat" down first, then the next ones come along and each ask if they can join her. Sure! So in turn, they "sit." The scene ends when the last 2 came along and asked what they were doing. They are told, "We're sitting on an invisible bench." The 2 newcomers point and say, "Didn't we tell you? It's over there!" Then all of those "sitting" fall over on the floor. They had a lot of fun practicing this one!




One of the other classes sang a song... and great example of the typical Korean "English" t-shirt.


...and two others played skits - "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Little Red Hen." James was in the highest grade level, even though it was unequal with his age, so that's why he's just a little dwarfed there! :) :) The kids were pretty clever with their costumes they made by themselves.

After the kids had all left, the staff took all the English teachers out for a great picnic lunch at the beach. It was a beautiful day with beautiful views.





Someone took a family picture for us...it will likely become our Christmas picture unless we get a good one later on by someone else.

Then, John also did Summer English Camp at school as well. He has a lot more pictures and could share some neat things with you. I will include these two for you now and see if I can get him to write more later.

One of the classes. A cake that one of the students gave him on the last day...white chocolate slivers on the top. Harry is the one in the green on the far left. A quick explaination on the words you see on the chalkboard...many of the children said this phrase since they saw it on TV, which is the biggest English "teacher" here. It is terribly overused here and inappropriately as well, so John finally posted some rules on the board. The first part of that sentence says "No -" and that is also why it is X'ed out. They are learning substitute exclaimations of surprise and the use of this phrase has decreased in his school, thankfully.
