Our First Guests!

SATURDAY:

First: I must show you my beginning attempt at homemade eggrolls...I spent an hour and a half chopping, cooking, and preparing everything...only to burn them while frying them up...oh, well, they were delicious anyway! This was Saturday night so I could practice before making them for our first guests on Sunday evening.



SUNDAY:

Kyung-Hee and Ae-Ran were our first guests for supper last night. (Ae-Ran is the one who has been teaching me Korean.) Our supper was a mix of American, Korean, and Vietnamese. We sat Korean-style, had egg rolls Vietnamese-style, and served them American-style...a 3 course dinner.


They read books with the kids for a few minutes while we finished up in the kitchen...note that the books are Korean! We are now starting our Korean book collection. Once we sat down, we served them American-style ~ salad first...(and I didn't burn the egg rolls this time...well, just to perfection!)


...then the main course of mainly Korean dishes - although we think the stir-fried zucchini in coconut oil was new to them. They did not want to try it at first since they thought it was cucumbers we'd cooked up...Jesse snitched on them and Ae-Ran tried to put her hand over his mouth, but we overheard anyway! They were great sports and gave it a try. Note the green leafy things on the table... Those are mint leaves: they are delicious to stack rice, bulgogi meat, kimchi, and veges in and then wrap up and eat. The kimchi at the end of the table was made by Kyung-Hee's mother...they brought it with them for a gift to us, along with some watermelon that is pictured on the right with oranges for dessert. (This watermelon is not what we consider watermelon, but is a type of melon.)

Then, the "main" dessert was completely all-American...although pulled from the breakfast line! French toast with a spread of peanut butter, sprinkled with honey, and topped with bananas, served with fruit. Okay, maybe it wasn't classic American french toast, but it was as close as we could get!!!



Ae-Ran had fun "flipping" with the kids before they head to bed for the night. We had an enjoyable evening, and it gave me more incentive in learning Korean so we can talk with Kyung-Hee...pretty much the only conversation between us is from Ae-Ran translating.
