Last Saturday, the church in Daesan had a VBS-type afternoon that we were invited to. It is a yearly event at which the children get to "buy" items with the "talents" that they have accrued by memorizing Scripture, etc. Upon arrival, they had a Bible story.
Then, the children were given their "money" and swarmed around the tables laden with goodies. James, Jesse, and Joy were kindly given 30 talents to spend at the tables. They had a lot of fun "shopping."
There were tables of merchandise and tables of food. In the first bowl are fat, long, chewy "noodles" for lack of a better term...we do not have them in America. The second dish is kimbap (rice & seaweed rolls). They even had pizza (third dish)!
But, personally, the most exciting thing for me was when I saw the popcorn!!!!!! (Remember, in an earlier blog how much I was missing popcorn??) My eyes lit up so bright that they laughed when they saw me. And then, not too long after, they came out and gave me a whole bowlful, just for me! Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!! It was sooooooo good! I savored it to the last kernel!
When we got home, we had a group of girls waiting in our front "yard." We taught them Red Rover...they loved it! As they were learning how to call each other over, they would sing, "Red Rover, Red Rover, send ____ Red Rover!" instead of "send ____ right over!" Again, I hadn't realized how similiar it sounded until they had a hard time hearing the difference. We also played with a big beach ball we brought with us.
We attempted to play volleyball by drawing a line in the gravel...until the ball went flying onto our flat roof! Thankfully, Ava was brave enough to climb for it!...first up some old metal shelves...then onto a discarded wardrobe...then pulled a chair up to climb the rest of the way...all for a ball! Everyone cheered when she made it safely.
Once Ava was up, however, John ran to grab the camera, effectively keeping Ava stuck on the roof for awhile! On Sunday, we went to church, and when we got back home in the afternoon, the girls were waiting for us....they wanted to play Red Rover again!! Afterwards, we came inside and Joy got her "Old Maid" cards out...they liked that, too!
About as "garden" as we're going to get this year, I'm afraid!! John planted 6 tomato seeds. Each pot came with a small baggie containing 3 seeds which he carefully planted. We pray that the harvest will multiply and be plentiful!!! Note the kumquats in the lower right-hand corner...very good here!!

Woo Hoo ~ popcorn!! Seems like everyone loves it and I'm glad you got to enjoy some! My mom loves it, too and sometimes wants only that for supper.
It was interesting to read about a typical teaching day for John, too. Why do you have to stay at school until 5:00 even though your classes end several hours earlier?
